How Merchant Banking App Notifications Differ from Direct Bank API Integration

Merchant banking app notifications and direct bank API integration are different approaches to using payment-related information. An app-based approach works with notifications produced by supported merchant banking applications, while API integration connects a system directly to services made available by a bank.

How the Two Approaches Differ

Merchant Banking App Notifications

Works with notification information received from supported merchant banking applications and therefore depends on notifications produced by the source application.

Direct Bank API Integration

Connects a system directly to API services made available by the bank rather than using merchant-app notifications as the source of information.

Merchant banking app notifications and direct bank API integration represent different approaches to using payment-related information within a merchant's operational system. With the merchant-app approach, Connect Hub Merchant Manager works with notifications received from supported merchant banking applications. When the source application produces a transaction notification, the notification information can be used for merchant alerts and automation. Customer payments still go directly to the merchant's bank account; Connect Hub does not receive or process customer funds. This means the approach has a dependency on the notification behavior of the merchant banking application. If the source application does not produce a notification for a particular transaction, a system relying on that notification does not have that source information for the transaction either. Formal bank API integration follows a different approach. Instead of relying on notifications produced by a merchant banking application, a system connects directly to API services made available by the bank. The fundamental difference is therefore the source of information and the integration method, rather than simply whether either approach can ultimately support a payment alert or merchant automation. The appropriate approach depends on the characteristics of the system and the integration channels available. Merchant-app notifications and bank APIs should not be considered the same technology, even though some user-visible outcomes—such as becoming aware that a payment transaction has occurred—may appear similar.
